July 3, 2023 on The Story: For about two years after the launch of a pilot program in 2021, Portland Street Response garnered a lot of support and praise. The program pairs mental health and medical professionals together for an unarmed response to crisis situations, taking over non-criminal calls that used to go to police. But just in the past few months, the program's seemingly bright future dimmed significantly, in large part due to leadership changes in the Fire Bureau, where PSR resides. During a recent interview with outgoing Fire Chief Sara Boone, we got a chance to ask her about PSR and the challenges that have been going on behind the scenes.
