Description
July 3, 2023 on The Story: Portland Fire Chief Sara Boone has never been much for the limelight. But after the recent announcement of her impending retirement, she was kind enough to allow The Story's Pat Dooris in for an interview about her life and career. In many ways, she's been a trailblazer. She became a firefighter in the '90s and was the first Black woman with Portland Fire & Rescue, one of only a handful of women with the agency at the time. After rising through the ranks, she was appointed fire chief in 2019 — the first Black chief in the agency's history. Inevitably, her race was a factor in her career, but it was never the focus. She only had eyes for the work and public service itself, she tells KGW — to the exclusion of just about everything else.
