June 5, 2023 on The Story: Above the coastal city of Newport are two aging, earthen dams. Though well-built when they were installed decades ago, they were installed in a time before engineers fully understood the potential for seismic activity along the Oregon coast. Now local leaders fear that without intervention, the dams will fail at the first appearance of a decently strong quake — something that could not only cause destructive flooding, but could ruin the area's supply of clean water.
