May 5, 2023 on The Story: It may not have the swagger of a November election, but ballots are out now for an election May 16 — and on the ballot are things that could very well affect you. Our focus tonight is on Multnomah County Measure 26-238. It would institute a new capital gains tax in order to fund free legal aid for renters facing eviction. Proponents of the measure say it's an effective means of keeping people in their homes, combating an important piece of the housing crisis in the county. But opponents think the tax is too broad and will only worsen the abysmal housing market by pumping up costs.
