April 25, 2023 on The Story: Beginning on Labor Day in September 2020, a historic wind event that blew through much of Oregon helped ignite or spread multiple fires — some of them growing to massive proportions. The fires burned down thousands of homes and other structures, killing almost a dozen people. Not long after that, investigations into the origins of the fires began, soon followed by lawsuits. One of those suits accuses utility company Pacific Power of starting some of the major fires by failing to de-energize power lines in extremely high-risk areas. Now, more than two years later, that $1.6 billion class action suit is finally going to trial. Tonight, we go through the opening arguments in this landmark case.
