Description
At the Willamette Heritage Center in downtown Salem, Ore. , Brian Sparks teaches woodworking. "That's what’s left of the tree over there. This bench is made from that. It's legs are are part of the old oak tree."
Likely over 200 years old, the old white oak came down in the ice storm in 2021. With old style tools, the center uses the wood to teach classes.
"You want to get that right on this pith. And then you want to whack it, right there. Sweet. Woo Hoo!"
The grant supported classes are now available to build stools, benches, hiking sticks and more from the old oak wood.
"We honor it by making something from it."
