Description
Feb. 28, 2023 on The Story: In western Washington's rural Grays Harbor County, the jail is disproportionately full of people suffering from severe forms of mental illness. Why? Because overpacked state-run psychiatric facilities aren't admitting people in a timely manner as required by law. The problem isn't limited to this one county, it's playing out across the state — and officials say it's dangerous for both the inmates and the corrections staff, neither of whom are equipped to handle the current state of affairs. The situation has resulted in a lot of finger-pointing between counties and the state, neither of whom want to take the blame for a crisis of mental health care.
