Description
Around 2013, “sea star wasting disease” started driving Oregon coast sea stars nearly to extinction. As many as 6 million may have died. Steve Rumrill, the shellfish program lead with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, helped co-author a recovery plan for one species, the sunflower sea star, which was particularly hard hit by the disease.
