Description
Richard Nevels is a driftwood beachcomber.
"You can see that the beauty is just barely, barely under the surface. And this black stuff on top just comes right off," Nevels said, cutting into a washed-up trunk.
Rich is identifying a certain kind of character in a certain kind of wood.
"So I'm looking for weird wood. I'm looking for weird, weird wood."
At his studio he's sawing, sanding and waxing art boxes that have boxes inside boxes. He’s been making them for over 40 years.
Cannon Beach’s Dragonfire Gallery owner Eeva Lantella makes sure to show local artists, currently including Nevels.
"Perfectly done. There're all lined on the bottom," said Lantella. "Many different types of wood and they all started out as driftwood that we walk by every day that we think is nothing."
