Nov. 22, 2022 on The Story: Yesterday we aired a report about prosecutions of misdemeanor theft in the Portland metro area, the continuation of a series we've done on the apparent rise in shoplifting. The report found that cases were significantly more likely to be prosecuted in Clackamas or Washington than in Multnomah County. DA Mike Schmidt said that this was because his office only prosecutes cases that they know they have the evidence to win. Tonight we talked to the DAs of Clackamas and Washington counties, both of whom said they do precisely the same thing, but manage to get a different result.
