Century High School in Hillsboro has a new paid apprenticing program to help students gain a more hands-on education. Teacher Matt Loun has five students who’re apprentices. "To come through the schools and into job opportunities that are currently available in the Hillsboro area for advanced manufacturing," he said. The 2-year Hillsboro program is the first of its kind in Oregon. When they work, they’re paid. Soudy Southasam is with Jireh Semiconductors. "We're trying to keep these young people, young talent, to especially stay in the area and also stay in the industry,” Southasam said. CHS apprentice Yuvindu Chandrasinghen goes to Tosoh Quartz to work on quartz glassware. "Do like runout — make sure there’s no side-to-side motion when you spin the tool for accurate cuts," he said, describing the work.
