Officers tried to arrest a man wanted on state and federal warrants when they said he pulled a gun and ran into an auto shop in Southeast Portland where he took a man hostage. Officers fired at the suspect, Robert Connelly, after he pointed a gun at them, Portland Police said. The man who was taken hostage, Miguel Sanchez, was waiting for his car at Rodriguez Auto Repair just off Southeast 82nd Avenue when Connelly ran into the shop with a gun, as seen in security footage. Sanchez hid in a cubby in a corner in the shop's office and said Connelly was trying to kick holes in the walls to escape when he spotted him. "I looked and he looked and we locked eyes and I thought 'Oh man I'm dead' and said 'Come on man, I'm not going to hurt you," Sanchez said. For the next few hours while police crisis negotiators and tactical teams responded, Sanchez was talking to Connelly. Despite the suspect smoking drugs from a pipe and saying he was ready to die, he listened when Sanchez shared his faith and talked forgiveness. "I said, 'I don't care what you did today I'm not concerned about what you've done in your life but he's willing to forgive you and you walk out alive from here, but if you don't' walk out there and they shoot you, you go straight to hell and you will pay for eternity,'" Sanchez said. Sanchez said Connelly then opened the door and showed his hands to officers, then followed their instructions. "I sat on the chair and just started bawling and praying," he added.
