Aug. 16, 2022 on The Story: Oregon has less than a third of the public defenders it needs, and it's throwing a wrench in the state's whole legal system. Defendants are suing over the fact they can't get a public defender to represent them in a timely manner. In a dramatic turn of events, Oregon's chief justice fired all nine members of the state's public defense commission this week amid a slow response to the public defender crisis, then hired some of them back.
