Coming this January, Portland Community College will have two new welding certificates that will get students into the workforce in 11 weeks. One is a maritime welding certificate which involved the ship industry. The other is a certificate in ship fitting where students learn how to build parts for ships. Instructors said more women are joining the male dominated industry. Alex Cuevas is taking classes at this time to become a welder. “I thought it would be cool to be one of the females getting on the ground and starting the culture of getting women involved in the field,” Cuevas said.
