Scammers use social media to prey on people who’ve had their cars stolen. Don't pay, because volunteers are willing to help for free.
Lisa Olson of Eugene almost fell for a scam after her motorhome was stolen on June 11. Olson reached out to a company using the Instagram profile name @9th_tech. The company claimed to be ethical hackers who could tap into dozens of surveillance cameras to help look for stolen vehicles.
Olson got suspicious when the so-called hackers said they found her stolen motorhome, but asked for $1,500 in exchange for its location.
