Description
The Procession of Souls [Procissao das Almas, in Portuguese] is a tradition in the city of Mariana, in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, that aims to preserve the memory and culture of the city, passing down the folklore and history of the community from generation to generation. On Holy Saturday, the faithful, dressed in white robes and hoods, carrying candles, replicas of bones and skulls, walk through the streets of the city singing funeral songs.
"Being here today, participating and helping keep this tradition alive, it's something I'm truly proud of," says Carla Juliana, a retiree. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
