Description
It’s not your average runway.
A small airplane made an emergency landing in a cornfield near Reynoldsburg after running out of fuel on Wednesday — and it was a local farmer who helped ensure a safe return to the skies.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the airplane landed in a field off Taylor Road SW, north of U.S. Route 40. There was only one person on board the plane and no injuries were reported.
Troopers said the pilot was flying from Tennessee to Akron.
Joe Bauman, who owns the property where the plane touched down, said he wasn't home when the plane landed.
“I was up road at the part store and my brother called me and said he heard sirens down this way and wanted to make sure I was OK,” Bauman said. “Just glad everybody is OK.”
A day after it touched down in the field, Bauman helped the pilot out by plowing a makeshift runway to get the plane out of the field and back into the air.
Plowing the field helped make the “runway” smoother and ensured the plane had a good, flat surface to take off into the sky.
The farmer said this isn’t the first time a plane landed near the property. He said a similar occurrence happened in the 60s.
For now, the story ends with wheels up — and one farmer who proved that not all heroes wear capes. Some drive tractors.
