Description
April 17 on The Story: A bill currently under consideration in the Washington Legislature would increase the amount of debt the state can take on for the Interstate Bridge Replacement project. But any further costs added onto the project will need to be paid down through tolling, which means commuters will be footing the bill. So far, Washington and Oregon have each pledged $1 billion for the project, and the federal government could account for as much as $3 billion. But the total cost could be between $5 billion and $7.5 billion, and tolling is the project's solution for anything not covered by the state and federal governments. Tolls are supposed to start on the current bridge about a year from now, when construction on the new bridge is just getting underway.
