Description
A man charged in connection with a shooting in Lower Downtown Denver that injured 10 people, including nine innocent bystanders who were celebrating the Denver Nuggets' 2023 championship win, was acquitted on an attempted murder charge Thursday.
Kenneth Blakely, 26, was arrested in June 2023 and tried this week on a charge of attempted first-degree murder-extreme indifference after four other charges were dismissed earlier this month.
The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. on June 13, 2023 near 20th and Market streets, just hours after the Nuggets won the NBA championship. Denver Police said their investigation revealed an exchange of gunfire between Blakely and Ricardo Vazquez was likely the result of a fight that broke out during a drug deal.
Blakely, Vazquez and another man were arrested in connection with the shooting. Vazquez was sentenced to 35 years in prison last month after pleading guilty in January to attempted first-degree murder and a drug charge. He was one of 10 people shot and claimed he was acting in self-defense.
