Description
Aurora Police are still looking for the person who threw rocks at a synagogue Sunday night.
The suspect was caught on camera at about 8:30 p.m., vandalizing the Ohr Avner Synagogue at East Mississippi Avenue and South Kingston Street.
Investigators are asking people to take a good look at the suspect and report any information they might know.
The suspect was seen wearing a blue hoodie, possibly from the North Face, with blue jeans and brown or gray shoes.
It's not the first time community members there said they've experienced anti-Semitism.
"We've had a lot of scary stuff happen here in the previous years," said Yehuda Aminov, of Ohr Avner Synagogue. "About 1.5-2 years ago we had somebody that tried to kidnap a child."
Aminov said they've also been shot at before and endure harassment when walking home after prayer.
On Sunday, rocks were thrown at the building, breaking several windows.
"We saw broken glass, broken windows, and it brought back, unfortunately, a lot of memories," said Aminov. "We left the former Soviet Union in order to have freedom of religion, in order not to have these type of situations happen. That's why we all came to America."
Arminov said he immigrated to the U.S. from Tajikistan.
Despite enduring prejudice, he said the community loves their neighborhood.
"We have a vibrant community. People are buying houses. People are opening up businesses. We don't want to move out. We want to stay," said Aminov. "We want to continue providing and living the American dream. So, it's unfortunate that some people want to stop us from doing that and they think we don't belong here."
Right now, he said they're going through the paperwork, trying to build a fence to help update security, among other improvements.
"We're trying to put in new doors that won't be glass, put steel doors to reinforce, to have more protection," said Aminov. "The fence, it costs a lot of money. We have a grant, but it's still going to cost more than that with all the permit fees and everything."
He said they're hoping people will help support this effort with donations.
If you have any information about this case you can call Aurora Police at: 303-739-1680 to report anything you might know.
