Denver Police on Thursday released body camera footage from a fatal shooting in which an armed man who was in an alley in Denver's Cole neighborhood was shot multiple times by officers and later died.
Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said they received a report just after 6:20 p.m. on March 20 of a person armed with a handgun in the alley behind Annunciation Catholic School in the 3500 block of North Humboldt Street.
Thomas said when officers responded, they contacted a man who matched the description they were given and saw that he had a handgun.
They repeatedly told him to drop the weapon, Thomas said, but he refused. He said after several minutes of trying, the man made a threatening gesture that put officers in fear of being shot.
Officers fired multiple rounds, Thomas said, and they struck him several times.
Thomas said officers took the man's weapon away and provided first aid before he was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and was in critical condition.
Police said the next day that the man had been pronounced dead. He's been identified as 57-year-old Jose Medina.
