Description
If you are heading to the high country, it'll be cooler, but by mountain standards, not too bad. Most locations should see highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Very light snow showers are possible along some of the higher peaks of the Continental Divide, especially along and north of Interstate 70.
You could encounter minor slow downs on popular passes, such as Vail Pass and Berthoud Pass, but overall, there mountain travel today will be good to go.
Wind is going to be a top story for the next several days. In fact, gusty conditions developed across the peaks and higher foothills of the Front Range overnight. Locations such as western Boulder County and western Larimer County could see wind gusts as high as 75 mph today. Gusts between 30-40 mph could be experienced in the lower foothills and favored areas west of I-25.
The most concerning weather story this week will be the growing fire danger in eastern Colorado. Several locations along and east of Interstate 25 are under a Red Flag Warning for this afternoon. That means conditions are right for fires to spread fast. We saw a handful of grass fires on Saturday.
Denver and the urban corridor have a Fire Weather Watch in effect for tomorrow. Gusty wind and near record highs will combine with the dry conditions to create fire weather concern. There is a good chance that tomorrow's watch will be upgraded to a warning later today.
A fast-moving storm will arrive on Tuesday and it will bring colder temperatures along with rain and snow. We should see all snow in the mountains with a mix likely for the lower elevations.
For Denver, this looks like an afternoon and evening event, with rain developing in time for the drive home from work and school. The rain should mix with and chance to snow during the evening hours. We could see some brief travel problems late Tuesday, so keep that in mind, especially if you plan to travel across the open plains east of Denver.
