Description
A wildfire that started Thursday afternoon near Colorado Springs Airport has burned around 3,000 acres, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department said after 2 p.m. that it was responding to the fire, which is being called the Meridian Fire.
There are 100 firefighters from 26 agencies responding to the fire, according to the sheriff's office. Three outbuildings were destroyed, but no homes. No injuries have been reported.
The fire is currently 30% contained. The cause and origin are under investigation.
Evacuations have been issued for people from Gusty Bluffs Point and Meridian Road North to Highway 94 and Franceville Coal Mine, and to the east border of Schriever Space Force Base in Ellicott. In an update Thursday evening the sheriff's office said they don't anticipate expanding the evacuation zone, which currently includes 350 homes.
A pre-evacuation warning has been issued for the area from Highway 94 and Franceville Coal Mine Road North to Davis Road, and east to the eastern border of Schriever Space Force Base. Those people are being told to prepare to leave.
The Red Cross has set up a shelter for evacuees at Patriot High School. Animals can be taken to the El Paso County fairgrounds.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department said those who are in danger should evacuate immediately, along with people who need extra time or help to leave their area.
