Description
Drivers will likely scratch their heads with new intersection changes in Douglas County.
New crossover-motion intersections, known as continuous-flow intersections (CFI), will open starting Wednesday along U.S. Highway 85 and Highlands Ranch Parkway.
The first two new intersections are expected to open in phases:
Wednesday, March 19 – Southbound U.S. 85 to eastbound Highlands Ranch Parkway traffic.
Wednesday, March 26 – Southbound U.S. 85 to eastbound Town Center Drive traffic.
The CFI at C-470, moving northbound U.S. 85 to westbound C-470 traffic, will be opened in early/mid-April.
"There's typically a small learning window. When the intersections first open, people will quickly get it, they adapt. It might look confusing on the ground from the perspective of the driver, but it's pretty conventional," said David Millar, traffic program leader.
The new flow will remove the conflict between on-coming traffic and drivers who are turning left at an intersection. US 85 drivers that turn left at the new intersections will cross through traffic using a new signal. Drivers will continue to the far-left side of the road and then make a left turn, while the other drivers proceed as they normally would at a typical intersection.
"These intersections have been around long enough. We have a very good track record, safety wise, they actually perform better 10 to 15% better in terms of reducing crashes," said Millar. "These typically run 30 to 70% more capacity than a conventional intersection of the similar size. That's one of the reasons we chose this type for this corridor."
