Coloradans should continue to be prepared for potentially significant snowfall in March. March is historically the snowiest month for Denver with a tendency for dramatic snowstorms. The month is closely followed by April, December and February in terms of snowfall averages. "March is, on average, by far our snowiest month of the year," said 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Chris Bianchi. The increased likelihood of major storms in March is attributed to a combination of factors, including a more southerly storm track and growing temperature disparities between regions. "We're starting to see a bit more of a temperature gap between the much warmer weather off to our south and the colder, more wintry air off to our north," Bianchi said. This temperature differential leads to stronger storms as nature attempts to equalize atmospheric conditions. Recent history supports this trend. Last year's "Pi Day snowstorm" dumped 10-11 inches of snow on Denver. In March 2021, Denver experienced its fourth-largest snowstorm on record, with 27 inches. The second-biggest snowstorm in Denver's history happened in March 2003. These aren't isolated incidents. Five of Denver's 20 largest snowstorms have occurred in March.
