Description
As snow piled up in areas across Colorado on Thursday, Denver's Downing Street Garage said the winter weather conditions caused an increase in the number of cars that needed repairs.
Zo Rodriguez said he had worked at the garage for seven years. "Any time there is weather out there we always see an uptick in weather-related incidents that happen to the vehicles out there," said Rodriguez.
He told 9NEWS about the types of repairs his shop typically sees when snow starts to fall.
"Curb hits, taking the corner too fast, or having improper tires will do that to you, we see quite a bit of that," said Rodriguez.
He said even a minor accident, can cause serious damage. He explained that when a car slides into a curb, the tires are often the first to bear the brunt.
"It could get to the point where you have to replace a lot of components in there, the control arm, the tire rods, the wheel bearing hub and depending on how bad the rim got hit, sometimes it cracks the rim so you have to get a new rim," said Rodriguez.
He said drivers should also consider deeper treads for their tires during the winter months.
He told 9NEWS that the penny test many drivers use to test their tread is not good enough.
"Penny rule is a little lower that's why I don’t like using that one. You can still slide around on the penny rule," he said.
