Description
Trust is earned. It can be built over years – or in a handful of months. Cada Jenkins knows she wouldn’t be able to stand behind her 960-pound feeder steer, Boomer, without a little trust.
“I like how he has a wide butt and his shoulders are pretty broad,” Cada said, as she brushed Boomer’s hind end.
Boomer is a 4-H project Cada will sell this summer at the Garfield County Fair's junior livestock sale. Cada and her brother Caeson Jenkins both know their steers rely on them for food and safety. They have been building trust with the animals since November.
“He kind of has a weird personality,” Caeson said as he fed his steer Big Papa. “He’s wanting to have the attention all to himself.”
Cada and Caeson live on a ranch about 25 miles west of Glenwood Springs with their parents, Chance and Courtney Jenkins. They raise SimAngus cattle, and everyone helps out. Chance and Courtney hope it teaches their kids a few things.
“Confidence. Responsibility,” both said as they looked out over the mountains on their ranch. “Confidence and responsibility is number one.”
In the past month, they have also been teaching Cada and Caeson about a new part of the landscape around their ranch – wolves.
“It’s here, and there’s no reason to complain about,” Courtney said. “It’s here now, and you just have to find solutions to work with it.”
