Description
Plant fall crops. We harvested the onions, making space for a fall crop of lettuce. You can also plant spinach, radish, arugula, cilantro and kale. They will grow well in the sun and enjoy the cool nights. When you harvest onions, air dry them on the patio or counter for a few days. Then clean and store them.
Freshen up container plantings. Annuals can get a bit scraggly this time of year. We re-planted some pots by removing the existing plants and starting from scratch. We used black-eyed Susans, ornamental kale, sage and dusty miller. These fresh plants will carry on well into fall.
We're also adding pots of China asters to the patio display. These were sown in April and potted in May. They've spent the summer in flats in the vegetable garden. They've now burst into bloom in lovely shades of pink, purple and white. It doesn't matter when you sow China asters. They bloom when they're good and ready, which is usually in late summer. They'll keep blooming well into fall.
