The box is used for property tax payments and sits outside the Jeffco administration buildings in Golden. The county told 9NEWS the box didn't have cash inside, but there were about 16 checks totaling around $61,000. They said someone tried to steal the checks inside by drilling out the lock. Fortunately, the break-in didn't work, but it did prompt change in the county. A separate drop box will stay inside the front lobby of the Jeffco admin building and be accessible during business hours Monday through Thursday. People can also pay online.
