Description
An unusual item pulled in more than four million dollars at auction in Longmont. It wasn’t a mansion, a painting or a rare diamond, instead it was a natural resource.
Auctioneer Scott Shuman took bids for 90 units of Colorado water. Each unit is about one acre-foot.
“Which would be about the same size as a football field," Shuman explained. "So, if you can imagine a football field one foot deep of water, that’s what you would be receiving on a yearly basis.”
He said everyone in the room has seen the short end of drought in the state at one time or another. Developers, cities, farmers and ranchers are all looking to stake a claim on a better future.
“So that water’s not speculated upon. We don’t want to have a speculated price that allows for inflation of the water value, we want to try to find the true value of the water as it is today.”
Johh Staley put in a $72,000 bid for the FFA or Future Farmers of America. The water will go to a new educational farm in Berthoud.
