For the first time in Colorado preps history, two athletes are headed Division I to play cornhole. On National Signing Day, Jaxon Remmick and Gavin Hamann made history by becoming the first Division I 5-star cornhole recruits in the country.
“I'm shocked I mean, as everybody is, it's crazy. It's groundbreaking, it's new, it's making history,” said Gavin Hamann.
“This is not just cornhole anymore. This is not just something you might see on ESPN see pros playing. This is something that is now going to give kids an opportunity to get scholarships, potential full rides eventually,” said Winthrop Cornhole Coach Dusty Thompson.
Winthrop is the first Division I institution to do such a thing.
“I just never would have thought picking up this hobby about two and a half years ago would turn into a D1 scholarship and a five star recruitment to this school,” said Hamann.
But for these two, making history is the norm.
“I mean, it's super awesome to make history. We did that with the first ever High School Championship back in 2021. And then also one in 2022,” said Remmick.
This duo is paving a way for an old game turned new college sport and having fun in the process.
“Cornhole is being played from ages, like 3 to 70 I mean, there's ages all around the board and there's so many kids that want to make this their career and I think this is the gateway to make that happen. And I'm excited to be part of that,” said Hamann.
