Description
A man is dead after shooting a Polk County deputy and a Bartow police officer during a "gunfight" Friday in Bartow, according to Sheriff Grady Judd.
It started around 11:30 a.m. when 34-year-old Wayne Volz — described by the sheriff as a "violent person" and "long-time drug addict" — got into a fight with his parents at their home on S Washington Avenue in Fort Meade.
Judd said Volz "pistol-whipped" his mother and pushed his father to the ground, asking "Do you want to die today?"
“He was out of control, he held them hostage, he pistol-whipped mom, he put a gun between his father’s eyes and told him he needed to beg for his life," the sheriff said.
Volz also reportedly claimed he was "Jesus and God" as he held his parents "hostage" all day.
According to the sheriff, when Volz's father said he needed to get to work at a Lowe's store in Bartow, Volz replied, "I need to go to Bartow and kill a lot of people anyway."
'We shot him enough...we shot him a lot'
The pair then drove to Lowe's where the father told his coworkers what had happened and called 911.
"By the grace of God, he didn't shoot in the Lowe's store," Judd said.
Bartow police responded to the scene to begin searching for Volz.
Around 4:30 p.m., Polk County Deputy Edwin "Ed" Alexander saw Volz walking near the Publix on N Broadway Avenue in Bartow.
That's when Volz ran past a sheriff's office drone operator who was looking for him. She told him, "stop or I'll tase you," but he reportedly kept running around the outside of the building.
“He shot Deputy Alexander’s car seven, eight times — a lot," Judd said.
