Description
A 16-year-old boy was charged as an adult in the death of a teen girl whose body was found last month near Cypress Lakes Preserve.
State Attorney Bill Gladson announced on Wednesday that a grand jury indicted Cameron Cubel for first-degree premeditated murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Abbriella Elliott.
Elliott was found dead by a passerby around 9:35 a.m. on March 27 in Ridge Manor. She had turned 16 just two weeks before her death, her family previously told 10 Tampa Bay.
"She was always smiling and singing and acting goofy," Elliott's mom, Danyel Caltagirone, wrote on a GoFundMe page. "She had so much life ahead of her."
Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said last month that a witness had come forward, revealing that Elliott left her home in the middle of the night at around 1:30 a.m. to meet someone who "was likely the person who killed her."
Nienhuis also said Elliott was likely killed using "an edged weapon."
"We could tell very quickly that there was a lot of passion and a lot of violence involved," the sheriff said at the time.
State Attorney Gladson confirmed on Wednesday that evidence, including text messages, showed Elliott and Cubel had "somewhat of a dysfunctional relationship."
“Dating violence is serious and dating violence is something that can be prevented," Gladson said.
According to the state attorney, Cubel will be transferred to adult court and could face life in prison if convicted.
“She brought light and joy to everybody that she met," Gladson said of Abbriella Elliott. “She, just by her presence, could change people’s lives.”
