Description
Weeks after a major fire tore through the CubeSmart self-storage facility on North 56th Street in Temple Terrace, customers say they are still unable to access their units — and are being billed for rent on spaces they cannot enter. The fire, which broke out nearly six weeks ago, damaged several storage units and left customers like Linda Webster in limbo. “It’s very frustrating,” Webster said. Webster relies on her unit to store inventory for her small business making faux flower arrangements and has been unable to assess the extent of her losses. “I just wanna know the extent of my damages,” she added. Despite the lack of access, Webster and others have received notices that their monthly rent is due, with late fees accruing after just a few days. “I have not had access to the unit, but they want the money. And after five or six days, they tack on a late fee,” Webster explained. Forced to replace her inventory out of pocket, Webster described the situation as a financial strain. “Why should I pay when I have no access to my storage unit? I don’t know the extent of the damage. And other than a manager, she’s giving me information only from what she hears.”
