Description
A man was shot to death by Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies after he allegedly broke into three homes in Lake Wales.
In a press conference, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the 43-year-old man, who is yet to be identified, broke into the homes while the homeowners were still there before demanding them to kill him.
Around 12:52 p.m. Friday, deputies received a call regarding a suspicious person who wandered into a 78-year-old man's garage.
"He had asked for a gun and said he wanted to be shot and killed," Judd said. "And this man was 78 years old, and he told him to get out of his garage."
Eventually, the man left the garage without injuring the witness. Soon after, he reportedly broke into a woman's house, telling her that he wanted to be killed and asking if she had a gun.
This prompted the woman to call the sheriff's office. Around 1 p.m. on Masterpiece Road, deputies arrived to de-escalate the situation before the suspect pulled out a pocket knife and began approaching them, Judd said.
One of the deputies shot the man several times, according to Judd. He died at the scene.
During an investigation, neighbors reported that the man had also broken into a home on Thursday night before stealing from the owner's fridge.
"He walked into a home last night out here that was occupied, went to the refrigerator, got food or drink out...then walked out of the house or was asked to leave the house, and went outside and started jumping on their trampoline," Judd said.
