From immigration enforcement, veto overrides and how to cut taxes, Governor Ron Desantis and Republican Capitol leaders continue to spar over what proposals should take priority--- the latest battle has the governor pushing support for one of the first lady’s key initiatives.
Flanked by a row of Florida sheriffs and First Lady Casey DeSantis Tuesday, the governor announced all 67 of Florida’s Sheriff’s Offices will now have a Hope Florida liaison in their building.
“Who acts as a point of contact between the sheriff's office and Hope Florida,” said Governor DeSantis. "It's going to help many more Floridians in-need connect with those in Florida who can help."
Hope Florida, a program under the Department of Children and Families, was started and is spearheaded by First Lady Casey DeSantis. It works to get Floridians off government assistance, connecting them with local nonprofits and faith-based institutions to meet their needs and develop a plan for long term self-sufficiency.
The Governor’s Office says 30,000 Floridians have reduced or eliminated their reliance on public assistance since being involved in the program.
“It's utilizing the resources exterior of government to provide those connections and to help people know that you can succeed in this country, you can do it,” Casey said Tuesday.
It’s a key initiative for the first lady, who is also reportedly mulling a run for Governor and could highlight the program on the campaign trail. In the meantime her husband, wants the initiative to have a longer-lasting impact.
DeSantis is pushing the legislature to act on codifying Hope Florida into law, a bill in the House and Senate would create a Hope Florida Office within the Executive Office of the Governor, and require all state agencies to participate in Hope Florida if directed to do so.
