Amalie Arena is undergoing a transformation from a hockey rink to a basketball court to host the NCAA Women's Final Four game.
The Tampa Bay Lightning played on Saturday night, but crews were able to set the basketball court up in about four hours.
Officials and experts started this process about a year ago when staff from Connor Sports, the NCAA's official court provider, worked with sustainable forest harvesters up in Michigan. The wood from there is taken to the manufacturing mill where the panels for the court are made.
Then, the panels are taken to the finishing team in Ohio, where they are painted with the logo, game lines and other artwork. The team of technicians and Amalie Arena conversion crew assembled the court, which weighs more than 42,000 pounds total.
"Pretty excited for what's going to happen in a couple of days, but took a long time to get here," said Connor Sports Director of Marketing Zach Riberdy
Tipoff is set for Friday at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. As of the time of this publication, the University of South Carolina and UCLA are two of the teams that will be competing for a spot in the national championship game on Sunday afternoon.
