Description
The mother of a man killed in a hit-and-run crash in Port Richey said she has a little bit of closure after the driver was sentenced to prison.
Trevor Crawford was killed as he rode his bicycle to work in June of 2023.
"We got justice, but not proper justice," his mother Jennifer Crawford said.
A judge sentenced Jason Closson to five years in prison followed by 10 years probation after pleading guilty. That decision provided Crawford some closure but said she hoped for the maximum sentence instead.
"It's like my wound got ripped open again. I don't have my baby boy anymore," she said. "I respect the judge but I still think he could have gotten more."
Loved ones of both Trevor Crawford and Closson spoke during Tuesday's sentencing at the West Pasco Judicial Center.
During sentencing, Closson stated he would've stopped had he known he hit Trevor Crawford and also made mention of no lights on the road during the evening hours.
The crash took place on Ridge Road near Old Ridge Road. Closson stated he was sorry for his "role in this tragedy."
"I apologize for leaving that night, and had I known that there was someone flying there, I would have stopped," Closson read in part from a letter he prepared.
Closson was charged with leaving the scene without rendering aid involving death and also driving with a suspended license.
