Journalists and historians are delving into thousands of newly declassified documents related to President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, released by order of President Donald Trump. Among the revelations, some suggest there’s a chance of a possible connection to Tampa, Florida, where Kennedy visited just four days before his death in Dallas. The files, part of an 80,000-page collection made public by the National Archives, have reignited interest in conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination. Rodney Kite-Powell, a historian at the Tampa Bay History Center, noted that there is evidence suggesting a potential assassination plot targeting Kennedy during his visit to Tampa. “There is some evidence that there were people in Tampa who wanted to play a role in Kennedy’s assassination,” Kite-Powell said. Kennedy’s motorcade in Tampa traveled along streets like Lafayette Boulevard—now Kennedy Boulevard—in the same open-air vehicle he was assassinated in days later. According to Kite-Powell, one theory involves a gunman allegedly stationed at the Floridan Hotel in downtown Tampa, mirroring the Dallas shooting scenario. However, this plot never materialized. The speculation ties back to tensions between the Kennedy administration and local mobsters upset over crackdowns on organized crime and Cuban trade restrictions. Kite-Powell cautioned that while intriguing, many such theories have been debunked over the decades. “Just because nothing did happen doesn’t mean that something couldn’t potentially have happened,” he added. The release of these documents fulfills Trump’s campaign promise to provide transparency regarding JFK’s assassination.
