Description
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is grieving the loss of a K-9 after it was shot and killed while off-duty, according to a press release.
Master Deputy Charles Perdomo let Canine Brooks out for a routine bathroom break around 9:30 p.m. on March 17 at his home in Lithia, the Sheriff's Office said. Despite being in a fenced yard, the K-9 managed to jump over the enclosure and ran into a nearby wooded area.
Around 10 p.m., a neighbor reportedly saw Brooks attacking his alpaca. The agency said the alpaca owner was not aware that the dog was a law enforcement K-9, and first tried to stop the attack by firing a shotgun to scare the animal away.
When the initial shot failed to deter Brooks, the resident fired a second round, which fatally struck the dog.
The alpaca suffered a minor leg injury, which required the appropriate treatment.
