Description
From streamlining permitting and debris cleanup to making more options for voters impacted by storms, state lawmakers are pushing forward a bill that would make significant changes to how locals plan for and respond to hurricanes.
The House Natural Resources and Disasters Subcommittee unanimously approved HB-1535, a wide-ranging proposal introduced by State. Rep. Fiona McFarland (R-Sarasota.) It's the product of feedback from local governments and stakeholders like HOAs, builders, emergency managers and more “all of that is boiled into this bill,” McFarland said.
Months after back-to-back hurricanes devastated the Gulf Coast, the bills aim to address several issues still facing residents.
Emergency management
The bill would require all counties and municipalities to post important information related to emergency response and preparation on their websites, including checklists for residents explaining the steps to take during recovery.
The proposal would also require all local emergency management personnel to complete training with the Division of Emergency Management every two years.
Debris management
County emergency management plans would have to include coordinated policies on how to relocate large debris items located near roadways.
Maximum rates will be set for contractors for debris removal after a natural emergency, varying on geographic location. Rates must be posted online and can be updated every two years.
