Description
TECO and Duke Electric said customers will see an increase of about $20/month on their bill starting this month.
Both companies said Florida’s back-to-back hurricanes caused widespread outages for millions of customers. They're raising rates to cover the cost of repairs.
“Our company had to basically deploy 27,000 resources. Those are things like linemen, vegetation management and staff to support the restoration efforts to get the lights back on for our customers,” Ana Gibbs with Duke Energy Florida said.
But, customers like Calista Snider said this is not her responsibility.
"There are damages to my property and my home that I have not been able to financially afford to repair yet. So, hearing about having to pay higher bills so TECO can repair their properties and their equipment is very upsetting," Snider said.
Other companies also want to raise rates. Florida Power & Light is asking for more than a billion dollars over four years.
