Description
More than three years have come and gone since Colton Wright was found murdered inside a Sarasota hotel room off University Parkway.
"It's been very difficult," the victim's mother, Amy Thompson, said. "Sometimes when I say the words out loud, 'three years,' it seems almost impossible it's been that long."
Family recently learned the wait would be even longer.
"All I want is for this to go to trial," Thompson said.
Brennan Wakey, 29, is accused of shooting and killing Wright, his then boyfriend, on Dec. 9, 2021, according to court documents.
A judge denied Wakey's request last year to dismiss the case based on Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law.
This week, the suspect was granted more time as the Second District Court of Appeal considers the Writ of Prohibition or in alternative, a Writ of Certiorari.
In turn, all proceedings are paused.
