Description
The head of the Catholic Church remains hospitalized in critical condition Monday embattled with a lung infection and mild kidney insufficiency.
Pope Francis, 88, was diagnosed with double pneumonia and has been in the hospital since Feb. 14.
Doctors have said his condition is touch-and-go, given his age, fragility and pre-existing lung disease.
On Monday, the Vatican issued an update that stated the Pope's condition, although critical, showed slight signs of improvement and he had resumed some work.
The head of the Catholic Church for nearly 12 years has received prayers worldwide, including from Tampa Bay area churches.
Monsignor Michael Muhr, who presides over St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Tampa, said he has led his community in prayer.
"I think he's touched a lot of lives," Monsignor Muhr said. "We have mass every day, so prayers are going on all the time and his name and his health is front and center now."
Bishop Gregory Parkes has asked Catholics across the Diocese of Saint Petersburg to pray for Pope Francis.
“We ask for God’s holy and healing blessing upon him during this time of illness. May he be strengthened by the certainty that God is with him in his suffering," Bishop Parkes said.
