Description
On Family Day at the Florida State Fair, visitors expressed confidence in the event’s enhanced safety measures, a significant shift from its past reputation as a chaotic gathering spot for teens.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is set to showcase its latest safety initiatives at the fairgrounds on Friday, reinforcing efforts to create a secure environment for families.
Over the years, the Florida State Fair has implemented stricter rules and security upgrades following incidents of unruly behavior.
One pivotal change requires individuals under 18 to be accompanied by an adult after 6 p.m., a policy aimed at curbing disruptive behavior.
“We’ve changed a lot of the program and how we layout the whole fairground,” Cheryl Flood, CEO of the Florida State Fair, said. “It’s a much safer environment, and we want families to come out and really enjoy time with their family.”
Parents like Teshia Burke noted the difference.
“When I was younger, the fair was almost like a little scarier,” she said. “Now there’s a lot of protection walking around, and it seems a lot safer.”
Visitors echoed similar sentiments.
Tom Howell praised the increased law enforcement presence, saying, “It’s gotten better and better every year.” His wife, Kim Howell highlighted new measures like bag checks and visible security at entrances, which weren’t present five years ago.
Much of the heightened focus on safety stems partly from the tragic death of Andrew Joseph III in 2014.
After being ejected from the fairgrounds during an incident involving teenagers, Joseph was struck and killed on nearby I-4. His mother, Deanna Joseph, reflecting on her son’s legacy has said: “Andrew influenced those changes so other children can be safe.”
