Description
U.S. President Donald Trump was elected chairman of the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, after vowing to fire board members and name himself chairman. He replaces David Rubenstein, a billionaire philanthropist who was appointed to the board in 2005 by President George W. Bush and then later named chairman in 2010.
Once including an even split of appointees from Republican and Democratic presidents, the Kennedy Center's board has been reshuffled to include almost entirely Trump appointees, marking the first time a president has made such a move since the performing arts center opened in 1971.
"President Donald J. Trump was just unanimously elected chairman of the board of the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.," Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday. "It is a great honor to be chairman of the Kennedy Center, especially with this amazing board of trustees. We will make The Kennedy Center a very special and exciting place!"
Trump had posted Monday on his owned social media platform that Richard Grenell would serve as the interim president of the Kennedy Center. Grenell has served in various roles within the previous Trump presidency, including acting Director of National Intelligence and ambassador to Germany.
"Ric shares my Vision for a GOLDEN AGE of American Arts and Culture, and will be overseeing the daily operations of the Center," Trump wrote Monday. "NO MORE DRAG SHOWS, OR OTHER ANTI-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA — ONLY THE BEST. RIC, WELCOME TO SHOW BUSINESS!"
