Description
The suspect shot by a Hernando County deputy during a physical altercation Thursday night has died from his injuries.
The shooting happened just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday in Brooksville.
According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Dylan Cianfarani chased after 62-year-old Michael O'Banner who ran away after being pulled over near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Brooksville Avenue.
The deputy eventually caught up to O'Banner near Ellington Avenue before getting into a "physical altercation," officials say. The deputy tried to use his taser during the fight, in which he sustained serious injuries including a bite to his neck, said Sheriff Al Nienhuis in a video.
When O'Banner reportedly reached for the deputy's firearm, Deputy Cianfarani shot him.
O'Banner was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound. In an update on Friday, authorities said O'Banner died from his injuries.
Nienhuis said the 62-year-old had an extensive criminal history including 33 felony charges with 24 convictions.
