Description
As the one-year mark of the deadly Clearwater mobile home plane crash approaches, family reflected on the immense loss that continues to ripple through their lives today.
On February 1, 2024 just after 7 p.m., a single-engine aircraft crashed into the Bayside Waters community located off of U.S. 19.
The plane struck two mobile homes, killing three people and injuring another.
The pilot, Jemin Patel, attempted to land at Clearwater Air Park but was unable to find the airport, despite the manual runway lights being turned on from another airplane that just landed, a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board revealed.
The pilot told air traffic control there was a fire and then lost engine control before the impact, the report stated.
Friends, Mary Pender and Martha Parry were inside one of the two homes struck by the aircraft and died in the accident.
"It's a big hole," Martha's son, Bill Parry said. "We really miss her."
Parry, one of three siblings, said the family wants to see a rotating beacon installed at the airport to help pilots find the runway in their mother's memory.
"That was the one thing we were hoping, out of all this, that would be for the good... That could possibly save other people," Parry said.
Just shy of two months following the crash, the Clearwater Air Park Advisory Board held an emergency meeting to discuss the need for the installation of a beacon at the airport.
