Description
A warning for pet owners.
The Humane Society of Tampa Bay says scammers are preying on people searching for lost pets.
The organization said they are first finding your information from lost-and-found pet websites and social media posts. Then they are calling using a number, that appears to be the Humane Society, and claiming they found your pet. They are demanding money to pay for life-saving treatments.
In one case, they scammed a woman out of more than $2,000.
"We were desperate to get our baby home," said Chloe Patera.
She says just days after posting a photo of her family's missing cat on Facebook, she got a call that said it was from the Humane Society.
At first, she ignored it, but when she called back "it was like, thank you for calling Tampa Bay Humane Society, where we help animals, you know, that stuff," said Patera.
But the man who answered was a scammer.
