Description
On Wednesday, St. Pete partnered up with the Bay Area Apartment Association to provide resources to hundreds of people displaced by back-to-back hurricanes.
The goal: to show what units are available and offer price cuts to people still out of their homes.
About 400 people came, with dozens lined up before the doors even opened, underscoring the need for housing for those waiting to rebuild.
Jacqueline Jackson and Unice Butler normally are neighbors off of 37th Street South. Both had homes flooded during Hurricane Helene and now, they're roommates.
“I’m still displaced,” Jackson says. “My home right now… everything four feet down is out of my home. [Butler’s] family, all of their family, they were just a blessing in inviting me in.”
“We're just trying to get permits and going through the process of seeing if the house has to be demolished, or can we go ahead with permits and have it repaired,” Butler adds.
Even those without mortgages may struggle with the cost of short-term housing, especially as FEMA housing vouchers dry up.
“We did not expect there to be 50 people waiting for us to open the doors at 1 o'clock,” Avery Slyker, St. Petersburg’s director of housing and community development, said. “[The need is] very great. We had a housing affordability issue and concerns prior to these storms.”
